Audible Studios, a production arm of Audible.com, the world’s leading provider of digital spoken-word entertainment, recently received its third Grammy nomination in the Best Spoken Word Album category, for the audio book Patience and Sarah. Written by Isabel Miller, the recording features breathtaking performances by Grammy Award-winning singer-songwriter Janis Ian and Emmy Award-winning actress Jean Smart.

Ian brought the project to Audible Studios, complete with her vision for two voices on the program.

Patience and Sarah is a meticulously researched historical novel that quickly became a classic of LGBT literature when it was self-published in 1969, garnering so much attention that the American Library Association created its first Stonewall Award specifically for the title in 1971. This is the first time the book has ever been brought to life in audio. Ian and Smart perform the title characters in this dual-point-of-view love story about two young women whose romantic bond does not sit well with the puritanical New England farming community in which they live.
