Traders Alert on Notable Stocks: Verizon Communications Inc. (NYSE:VZ), Starbucks Corporation (NASDAQ:SBUX), Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. (NYSE:WMT), ConAgra Foods Inc (NYSE:CAG)

On Friday, Shares of Verizon Communications Inc. (NYSE:VZ), gained 0.34% to $44.24.

Verizon Communications and the Michigan State Police declared recently the launch of a partnership designed to educate Michigan high school students on the dangers of distracted driving. Colonel Kriste Kibbey Etue, Director of the Michigan State Police and Verizon Vice President of Communications Jeffrey Nelson, made the joint declaration at Novi High School with the support of Senator Mike Kowall of Michigan’s 15th District and Novi Community Schools Superintendent, Dr. Steve Matthews.

Statewide, the Michigan State Police dedicates 33 community service troopers (CSTs) to educate the public on prevention, education and awareness issues, counting distracted driving. The CSTs will assist in the distribution of thousands of awareness-raising phone wallets, displaying the message “One Text or Call Could Wreck It All,” courtesy of Verizon.

Starbucks Coffee Company expanded its commitment to supporting the specialty coffee industry by addressing one of the most noteworthy threats to coffee farmers. Starting tomorrow, Starbucks will distribute coffee trees to farmers who have been most influenced by coffee rust, a plant fungus that damages millions of coffee trees around the world, making it harder for farmers to produce high-quality coffee for the entire industry. Through September 2016, Starbucks will ensure that a coffee tree is planted for every bag of coffee purchased in a participating U.S. store.

“Purchasing from more than thirty countries, Starbucks scale affords us the opportunity to bring customers the most unique, high quality coffee from around the world. It also gives us the responsibility to make sure we invest in tangible ways that assist to ensure farmer livelihoods and the stability of the entire supply for the industry,” said Craig Russell, executive vice president, Global Coffee for Starbucks. “We have heard directly from farmers that assisting them get new rust resistant trees will make the most impact. We are figuring out the way to do that while offering our customers an opportunity to get involved.”

Starting in Mexico, Guatemala and El Salvador, Starbucks will work with Sustainable Administration Services (SMS), Starbucks partner in the export and delivery of green coffee, to successfully germinate the seedlings and distribute the trees. The distribution of each coffee tree will be supported by Starbucks Coffee and Farmer Equity (C.A.F.E.) Practices, developed over a decade ago with Conservation International to safeguard responsible purchasing practices and economic, social and environmental standards, globally. These sourcing standards are then augmented by Starbucks Farmer Support Centers that provide on-the-ground agronomy services. Recently, Starbucks has six farmer support locations around the world and will add two more – one in Sumatra, Indonesia in 2015 and another in Mexico opening in 2016.

Wal-Mart Stores is taking a big step toward fulfilling its long-term ambition of being wholly supplied by renewable energy with a new deal to buy more than half of the electricity generated by a new wind power facility in Texas for the next ten years, according to Fortune.

The world’s largest company will buy 58% of the predictable output of Pattern Energy Group’s 200 megawatt Logan’s Gap Wind facility in Comanche County, Texas (150 miles southwest of Dallas). The amount of energy sourced from the facility will account for nearly one-fifth of the contribution of Walmart’s U.S. division, its largest by far, to the overall company’s aim of getting 7 billion kilowatt-hours of renewable energy by 2020.

“That’s a noteworthy leap forward on our renewable energy journey,” said Walmart’s vice president of energy, Mark Vanderhelm, in a statement on Monday.

Walmart’s purchase will cover more than 25% of its electricity needs in the parts of Texas that are deregulated and serve 380 stores, or nearly 10% of its U.S. fleet. Fortune Reports
