United States Steel, on Tuesday accepted an offer from the United Steelworkers union that will keep workers employed while labor negotiations continue, according to American City Business Journals.
U.S. Steel’s current contract with the USW expired on Tuesday, Sept. 1., at 11:59 p.m., according to our sister publication in Pittsburgh.
USW’s bargaining committee on Monday extended the offer that will permit 16,500 U.S. Steel employees to stay on the job amid contract talks. American City Business Journals reports
“We appreciate the United Steelworkers’ commitment to extend the contract negotiations to give ‘the parties the fullest possible opportunity to resolve their differences and thereby avoid a work stoppage,’ as stated in their letter dated Aug. 31, 2015,” U.S. Steel said in a written statement.
Production has nearly halted at the Fairfield Works in unincorporated Jefferson County, as U.S. Steel plans to switch operations to a new electric arc furnace in the last half of 2016. American City Business Journals added.
