NurOwn® is an autologous cell therapy in which bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells are expanded and then, under proprietary conditions, induced to secrete several neurotrophic factors known to promote neuronal survival. BrainStorm has accomplished two clinical trials of these neurotrophic factor-secreting mesenchymal stem cells in Israel, and is presently enrolling a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled phase 2 study at three centers in the United States.

At the end of Tuesday’s trade, Cara Therapeutics Inc. (NASDAQ:CARA)’s shares gained 9.22% to $11.96, as there’s a growing and increasingly vocal body of researchers showing that cannabidiol (“CBD”) - the non-psychoactive component of the cannabis plant - could provide substantial health benefits. According to Project CBD, an advocacy group, CBD could serve as a potential treatment in areas like pain administration, oncology, neurological disorders, cardiovascular disease, antibiotic resistance, and more. Studies focused on cannabinoids are being conducted by a number of different companies, counting Cannabis Science Inc. (CBIS) and Cara Therapeutics Inc. (CARA).

Peak Pharmaceuticals Inc. (PKPH) is aiming to become a sector leader focused on delivering the potential health benefits of CBD and other phytocannabionds to humans and animals. While the FDA prohibits companies from making health claims without clinical trials, the HIA v. DIA court decision cleared the way for hemp-based foods to be sold as nutritional supplements throughout the United States.

Cara Therapeutics, Inc., a clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company, focuses on developing and commercializing chemical entities designed to alleviate pain by selectively targeting kappa opioid receptors.
