The UK and its allies have trained more than 17,000 Ukrainian recruits over the past year, according to the British Ministry of Defense.
The recruits went through a “tough” five-week program that the ministry said turned them “from civilians to soldiers.”
The UK and nine partner countries, namely Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Norway, Finland, Sweden, Denmark, Lithuania and the Netherlands, initiated this initiative to recruit new volunteers for the Ukrainian armed forces last June.
Initially, the UK offered to train up to 10,000 Ukrainian soldiers in combat skills based on the basic training soldiers receive in the UK. By 2024, the program has been expanded to train around 30,000 recruits, according to the British Department of Defense.
The ministry said the exercise “significantly increased combat effectiveness” in Ukraine. “The UK Armed Forces are in close contact with Ukraine to improve and develop a training course based on the skills that are most needed on the battlefield,” she added.
