The death toll in clashes between herders and farmers in Nigeria’s central Plateau state has risen from 30 to 85, a local official said on Thursday.
The head of the Council of Local Government, Minister Dabo Daniel, told Agence France Presse that “85 bodies have been recovered” since the attacks that took place last Monday in the Mango area.
Rural communities are witnessing widespread violence and crime in northwest and central Nigeria, where armed gangs kidnap dozens of villagers and demand a ransom for their release.
Rural violence is one of the issues facing Nigeria’s new president, Bola Tinubu, after his election victory last month in a poll marred by accusations of fraud.
The Nigerian army is seeking to quell violent jihadist insurgency in the northeast and secessionist tensions in the southeast.
