Moscow’s chief psychiatrist Georgy Kostyuk said that an hour of laughter can help burn up to 350 calories, as laughter activates about 80 muscles in the human body.

“Laughter activates about 80 muscles. A full hour of laughter burns about 350 calories,” Kostyuk told the Novosti agency on the occasion of the International Laughter Day, which the world celebrates on April 1.

He added that laughter leads to a change in the type of breathing, an increase in oxygen metabolism in the brain, organs and tissues, and the disappearance of congestion in the lungs. International medical research shows that optimistic people are less likely to contract viral diseases. These people care more about their health, lead an active lifestyle, give up bad habits, which makes them more resistant to various diseases.

He continued: “I have observed patients recovering from injuries and surgeries, and have personally noticed that people with a positive mindset recover much faster and tolerate pain more easily than pessimists.

He explained that optimists release serotonin, the happy hormone, which is a natural pain reliever. Pessimists are dominated by cortisol, a stress hormone that can increase pain and trigger disease.
