Active Stocks in the News: Halliburton Company (NYSE:HAL), Alpha Natural Resources, Inc. (NYSE:ANR), Sinclair Broadcast Group, Inc. (NASDAQ:SBGI)

On Monday, Shares of Halliburton Company (NYSE:HAL), gained 1.31% to $41.87.

Halliburton Company, and Baker Hughes Incorporated (BHI) declared that they have reached a timing agreement with the Antitrust Division of the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) pursuant to which both companies have agreed to extend the period for the DOJ’s review of Halliburton’s formerly declared acquisition of Baker Hughes to the later of November 25, 2015 or 90 days after both companies have certified substantial compliance with the DOJ’s second request. Both Halliburton and Baker Hughes expect to certify substantial compliance with the DOJ’s second requests, issued to each company, by mid-summer. Timing agreements are often reached in connection with large, complex transactions, and provide the DOJ additional time to review responses to its second requests. In light of the timing agreement, Halliburton and Baker Hughes also have agreed to extend the time period for closing of the acquisition to no later than December 1, 2015.

Halliburton Company provides a range of services and products to the upstream oil and natural gas industry worldwide. The company operates through two segments, Completion and Production, and Drilling and Evaluation.

Shares of Alpha Natural Resources, Inc. (NYSE:ANR), inclined 4.87% to $0.26, during its last trading session.

Three operating associates of Alpha Natural Resources have notified their employees recently that they may sell substantially all of the assets of the mining operations where these employees work. In accordance with requirements of the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) Act, the operators have given notice to about 292 employees at six mines and a processing plant in southwest Virginia and eastern Kentucky of the predictable idling of those facilities in anticipation of their potential sale.

The mining operations affected by the WARN notice are:

  • Mill Branch Coal Corporation’s Dorchester and Osaka deep mines in Wise County, Virginia, which have 134 employees.
  • North Fork Coal Corporation’s North Fork No.6 deep mine in Letcher County, Kentucky, and the Panther No.1, Stillhouse No.1 and North Fork No.7 deep mines, which are presently idled. A total of 111 employees work at the No.6 mine or perform maintenance at the idled operations.
  • Pigeon Creek Processing Corporation’s Plant No.1 in Wise County, VA, which has 31 employees.
  • Maxxim Shared Services’ support personnel for the mining operations, totaling about 16 employees.

Alpha Executive Vice President of Mining Operations Keith Hainer said, “This action is consistent with steps Alpha Natural Resources has taken in the past to build a sustainable portfolio of mining assets across the company’s operational footprint.”

Alpha Natural Resources, Inc., together with its auxiliaries, engages in extracting, processing, and marketing steam and metallurgical coal in Kentucky, Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia, and Wyoming. It operates through two segments, Eastern Coal Operations and Western Coal Operations.

Finally, Sinclair Broadcast Group, Inc. (NASDAQ:SBGI), ended its last trade with 2.26% gain, and closed at $29.47.

Sinclair Broadcast Group, declared the launch date for “Full Measure with Sharyl Attkisson” to debut on Sunday, October 4, 2015. The broadcast will air on Sinclair’s associates nationwide and be accessible on their websites. The 30-minute program, which will be based in Washington, D.C., will focus on investigative journalism and target accountability in the public and private sectors.
