Amnesty International condemned the reciprocal attacks between Israel and Palestinian armed groups in the Gaza Strip last May and considered that they amounted to “war crimes”.
The organization said that “Israeli raids unlawfully and often without military necessity destroyed Palestinian homes in a form of collective punishment of the civilian population,” stressing that “Israel carried out disproportionate air strikes that killed and injured Palestinian civilians, including children.” .”
According to the organization, “deliberately launching disproportionate attacks is a war crime,” noting that it “investigated nine Israeli airstrikes that killed civilians and damaged and destroyed homes in the Gaza Strip.”
It notes that on the first night of Israeli airstrikes on May 9, there were three separate attacks “when precision-guided bombs hit three high-ranking commanders of the Al-Quds (Islamic Jihad’s military wing), killing ten civilians and injuring at least 20 others.”
It stated that these bombs were “launched in densely populated areas of Gaza City … while families slept in their homes, indicating that those who planned and authorized the attacks expected and most likely ignored disproportionate harm to civilians.”
