AMD Plans to Develop AI Chip for Chinese Market to Comply with US Export Curbs

AMD Explores AI Chip Development for Chinese Market

AMD has expressed its intention to create an artificial intelligence (AI) chip specifically tailored for the Chinese market to ensure compliance with US export restrictions. This move follows similar actions by competitors Nvidia and Intel.

Lisa Su, CEO of AMD, emphasized the significance of the Chinese market and the company’s commitment to adhering to US export controls. While maintaining compliance, AMD recognizes the opportunity to develop AI solutions for the Chinese customer base.

AI accelerator chips, which are essential for training large datasets in AI applications, are the focus of AMD’s efforts.

Challenging Nvidia in the AI Training Chip Market

AMD is preparing to ramp up production of its MI300 chip, positioning it as a competitor to Nvidia’s graphics processing units used for AI training. While Nvidia currently dominates the market, AMD aims to pose a challenge with its latest chip.

Earlier this year, US government restrictions prevented Nvidia from selling its A100 and H100 chips to China, with H100 being a crucial AI chip for Nvidia. In response, Nvidia modified the H100’s specifications to comply with the export curbs.

Intel also adapted its Gaudi 2 AI chips to meet the requirements of the Chinese market.

China remains a highly profitable market for US chipmakers, particularly in the field of AI where there are limited domestic alternatives to Nvidia.

The success of AMD’s MI300 AI chip is pivotal as it strives to compete with Nvidia. The company expects this chip to drive significant growth in its data center business for the remainder of the year.

Su projected approximately 50% growth in AMD’s data center business during the second half of the year compared to the first half, largely attributed to the introduction of the new AI chip.
