Sources said Wednesday that the Gabonese army arrested a South Korean who works there as a secretary to the first lady.

A source told the Yonhap News Agency that three other South Koreans work as presidential guards and are still in their dormitory as part of the security apparatus. There are no other details.

Currently, 44 South Korean citizens live in Gabon, including 33 residents. The South Korean embassy in Gabon said the other 11 people were employees of the embassy and were members of their families.

With the exception of the secretary, the source said that all other Koreans are safe.

Today, on Wednesday, the Gabonese military announced the “end of the existing regime” in the country, shortly after the official results of the presidential elections were announced on Saturday, in which President Ali Bongo won a third term.

The president of Gabon was placed “under house arrest” surrounded by his family and doctors, and one of his sons was arrested on charges of “high treason” as soon as the president was officially declared the winner of the election, with 64.27% of the vote. voices when a group of about 12 soldiers appeared on the screen of the Gabon 24 station from the presidential palace.

And one of the soldiers, an army colonel, said in a statement broadcast on the first Gabonese television channel: “We, the defense and security forces, gathered in the committee for the transition and restoration of institutions, decided in the name of the Gabonese people, in order to protect peace, putting an end to the existing regime.”
