German authorities have arrested two Syrians on suspicion of belonging to two extremist groups, and one of them is suspected of being involved in a 2013 attack in eastern Syria that killed more than 60 people.

The charges relate to war crimes in a June 2013 attack in the village of Khatla in the province of Deir ez-Zor in eastern Syria, which killed about 60 people.

Prosecutors said the attack was carried out jointly by the Jund al-Rahman Brigade under the command of Amir and other extremist groups.

Prosecutors said the survivors of the attack were forced to flee to other parts of Syria or abroad, deliberately instilling fear of death, as well as through arson and looting.

Amer has also been charged with war crimes amid forced displacement and ISIS affiliation.

They also noted that Amer joined ISIS in July 2014 and put his group under his leadership.

As for the second defendant, “Vasil A.”, the prosecution clarified that by the end of 2013 he held a “prominent military position” in his group, and in December 2013 and April 2013 he led the organization’s units in battles against Syrian forces. 2014, especially at Deir ez-Zor military airport.

On Wednesday, a judge ordered the two suspects to be detained pending possible charges.
