Vienna police stepped up armed patrols in sensitive locations in the Austrian capital, including churches, on Wednesday after the country’s local intelligence agency received information suggesting terrorists were planning an attack.
The Vienna police tweeted: “It is currently impossible to estimate how long this strict site protection will last.”
If the threat narrows down to a certain location, the police will immediately issue an alert.
The police explained that they could not say how long the security measures would be in place.
“Police officers are equipped with helmets, bulletproof vests and assault rifles, and they will conduct surveillance as well as conduct checks on the roads,” police spokesman Markus Dietrich told local radio station Finn.
Dietrich did not provide any other details about the threat’s backstory, but said more policemen patrolling near churches would be shown.
Police have urged citizens not to post pictures or video clips of their deployed members on social media.
In 2020, a man who previously tried to join ISIS carried out an attack in Vienna using an automatic rifle and a fake explosive vest, killing 4 before being killed by police.
