The Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry summoned Iranian Ambassador to Baku Abbas Mousavi and handed him a note of protest after an Iranian military plane flew over the international border between the two countries.
A joint statement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Defense of Azerbaijan states that “an Iranian military aircraft flew today, March 11, 2023, from 9:44 to 10:26” 8:44-9:26 Moscow time along the Azerbaijani-Iranian border., at a distance of 3-5 km, in the section from Zangilan to Bilasovar back and forth, and in some cases directly stormed the Azerbaijani borders.
The statement emphasizes that the approach of an Iranian military aircraft to the border with Azerbaijan and its flight over the border line “create a threat to the security of civil aviation and exacerbate bilateral relations.”
He added: “The more than half-hour flight of an Iranian military aircraft near the liberated Azerbaijani lands is a provocation against Azerbaijan, an aggressive and unfriendly behavior towards it.”
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Defense called on the Iranian side to clarify what happened, as well as “refrain from such provocative actions in the future.”
