International press reports sparked controversy over FC Barcelona’s exclusion from European competition due to Negrera’s arbitration case.
The Catalan club was accused of paying bribes to Enriques Negrera, the former head of the refereeing committee of La Liga, which indicated the existence of harsh penalties that would be imposed on the club.
The fact is that Barcelona was expelled from the Champions League
And the ABC newspaper reported that EU inspectors had concluded that Barcelona should be punished with exclusion from the Champions League because of the Negrera affair.
The newspaper stressed that UEFA President Chevren now has to choose between opening a case and waiting for a decision from the Spanish judiciary or expelling the club from Europe for a year.
Well-known Catalan journalist Gerard Romero replied that the Catalan club did not suffer any punishment in this case.
While the Spanish newspaper Sport reported that Barça denied these reports and stated that their goal was only to discredit the club.
