Minsk announced on Thursday that fighters from the Russian Wagner Group, who were forced to flee their country in Belarus, an ally of Moscow, after the failure of their mutiny at the end of June last year, will train with Belarusian special forces.
The Belarusian Defense Ministry reported on Telegram that “within a week, units of the Belarusian special forces and representatives of the Wagner group will work out combat missions at the Bretsk training ground” near the border with Poland, AFP reports.
Section 2
This comes after Minsk reported last week that Wagner fighters were training Belarusian recruits at a training ground southeast of the capital Minsk.
They will no longer fight in Ukraine
On Wednesday night, a video clip posted by Telegram accounts claiming he was close to Wagner, but AFP was unable to verify, showed Yevgeny Prigozhin receiving his people “in Belarus territory” and explaining to them that they would no longer fight in Ukraine.
In this video, Prigozhin asks his troops to train the Belarusian army and prepare for a “return to Africa” as Wagner is present in several countries.
June 24
It is noteworthy that on June 24, when the conflict with the Russian General Staff reached its climax, Wagner fighters took control of the army headquarters in Rostov-on-Don in southern Russia for several hours and drove hundreds of kilometers towards Moscow.
And their rebellion ended on the evening of June 24 with an agreement on the departure of Wagner’s chief Yevgeny Prigozhin to Belarus. And the Wagnerites were offered to join the regular troops, return to civilian life, or leave with the commander for Belarus.
