US President Joe Biden called the decision of the International Criminal Court to issue an “arrest warrant” for Russian President Vladimir Putin “reasonable”, although Washington does not recognize the jurisdiction of the criminal court.
And a press meeting at the White House quoted Biden as saying, “I think it’s justified.”
Meanwhile, the US president noted that Washington does not recognize the jurisdiction of the International Criminal Court, but in the case of the Russian leadership, the position of the court is “very strong”, and Biden again accused Russia of committing war crimes in Ukraine.
Earlier Friday, the Pre-Trial Chamber of the International Criminal Court, whose jurisdiction is not recognized by the Russian Federation, issued an “arrest” warrant for Russian President Vladimir Putin and Presidential Commissioner for Children’s Rights Maria Lvova Belova.
Press Secretary of the President of Russia Dmitry Peskov confirmed that Russia does not recognize the jurisdiction of the International Criminal Court, and any decisions taken by it are void and unacceptable from a legal point of view.
For her part, the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, confirmed that the decision of the International Criminal Court to issue a warrant for the arrest of Russian President Vladimir Putin has no significance for Russia.
Zakharova wrote in her Telegram account: “The decisions of the International Criminal Court are meaningless for our country, including from a legal point of view.”
Dmitry Medvedev, deputy head of Russia’s Security Council, also noted that there was no need to clarify the use of an ICC document to issue an arrest warrant for President Vladimir Putin, accompanied by a toilet paper icon.
Medvedev wrote on his English-language Twitter account: “The International Criminal Court has issued an arrest warrant for Vladimir Putin. There is no need to explain where this document was used.”
