Two members of the US House of Representatives have called on President Joe Biden to stop funding the UN Green Climate Fund over suspicions that it is funded by China.
Spokesmen Michael McCall and Brian Mast said in a letter to Biden that his decision to provide $1 billion to the Green Climate Fund was of “growing concern”, seeing the fund as “China’s funding conduit”.
They noted that the UN fund has pledged $100 million to the Shandong Green Development Fund, which “does not have an oversight mechanism and cannot provide any satisfactory reporting on its climate change efforts.”
Two MPs felt that the “non-transparent transfer of funds” from the fund to China was “unjustified and inconsistent with the UN’s goals of accelerating the transition to clean energy and combating carbon emissions.”
Both deputies also considered that China is no longer a developing country, and therefore has no right to receive financial assistance from the UN.
Both spokesmen called on the US administration to “stop funding global climate programs” and “take steps to remove China’s developing country status.”
