British Troops Accused of Grave Wrongdoings: A Look at Their Connection to Afghanistan

The head of a public inquiry into “very serious” allegations of dozens of extrajudicial killings by British troops in Afghanistan said on Wednesday that any soldier who broke the law would be investigated.

It comes after the British Ministry of Defense commissioned this independent investigation last December after the BBC aired a documentary that said British Special Air Force soldiers had killed 54 people in Afghanistan under suspicious circumstances.

The investigation also came after the two families began filing lawsuits demanding that judges review their case after they accused SWAT of killing their relatives in 2011 and 2012, Reuters reported.

“Deliberate Detentions”

“The allegations that the commission must consider – and I stress that these are only allegations at this stage – are very serious,” Judge Charles Haddon-Keif, chairman of the investigating committee, told reporters as the official investigation began.

He added that the investigation will investigate whether British soldiers were involved in illegal activities between mid-2010 and mid-2013 during “deliberate detentions” and whether there are convincing reports of extrajudicial executions.

Contacting the relevant authorities

He also indicated that the commission would check the validity of the investigations carried out by the military police and whether any unlawful killings would be covered up so that they would not “appear forever”.

He concluded: “It is important that anyone who breaks the law is referred to the appropriate authorities for investigation. In the same way, those who have done nothing wrong should not remain beyond suspicion. This is of decisive importance both for the reputation of the armed forces and for the state. .”
