Potential Return of Old Capcom Licenses

During the Game Awards 2023 ceremony, there is a good chance that Capcom will win the publisher of the year award. It’s simple, with a Metacritic score of 93 and 92 respectively for Resident Evil 4 (2023) and Street Fighter 6, the company released two must-have games of the year. However, we do not yet know what the firm has in store for the future, if not Dragon’s Dogma 2, Exoprimal, or Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess. It was therefore during a question-and-answer session with its investors that Capcom mentioned the existence of old licenses that had remained in the closet.

During the conference, an investor asked a very specific question regarding Monster Hunter, Toraware No Palm, Sengoku Basara, and especially Onimusha. And the good news is that Capcom is not closing the door on their return:

“If the answer is encouraging, it is nonetheless vague and it is not known if it applies to one of the licenses mentioned or all. In the case of Monster Hunter, it is obvious that new episodes are planned in the future, as the franchise is Capcom’s goose. And then, as for Onimusha, this name comes up regularly, which suggests a potential comeback. On the other hand, Sengoku Basara, a sort of Dynasty Warrior among samurai, and Toraware No Palm, a visual novel from 2019, are more unexpected titles whose return would be surprising. However, in the licenses mentioned, there is one that stands out more than the others.”

Soon a return of Mega Man?

Also during this session, an investor asked about the Mega Man saga. And there, the firm was more talkative than expected:

“This kind of answer therefore suggests that Mega Man will be entitled to new games in the future, but that Capcom is looking for a way to bring it back under good conditions. This is even assured since an investor asked a specific question regarding the franchise’s upcoming ports and game collections. Representatives of the firm replied: ‘we are thinking about our approach to ports of older titles, which includes fixing technical issues’. With the recent hit Mega Man Battle Network Legacy Collection fast approaching 1 million sales, it’s a safe bet more Mega Man compilations are on the way in the future.”
