Caution: Your Phones Could Be Infiltrated by Terrifying ‘Ghost Touch’ Technology

WhatsApp

Electronic security experts have warned that hackers and intruders can now remotely unlock phones using a terrifying new technology dubbed “ghost touch,” according to Britain’s Daily Mail.

Ghost Touch

NordVPN is urging mobile users to beef up their security amid the rise of “Ghost Touch” attacks, which allow criminals to take control of their device from a distance of up to 4 cm.

The attacks use electromagnetic signals to mimic touch screen touches, which means attackers can secretly access personal data or even install malware. Libraries, cafes, and public lobbies are considered prime targets for this type of attack, as users are often oblivious to what is going on and tend to place their phones on tables.

under the table

Security expert Adrianas Varmenhoven of NordVB said the hackers are preparing equipment under the victim’s desk in advance and launching the attack remotely. Hacking can occur without the user noticing what the phone has been exposed to.

After the hacker identifies the type and model of the smartphone, he proceeds to the stage of cracking the password of the device, and although hackers find most of the passwords through the dark web, many of them are targeted personally at the phone user by setting up specialized equipment. emit identical electromagnetic signals that disrupt the normal behavior of the phone.

Fake touchpoints

After targeting a device, hackers can remotely implant fake touch points into the screen to mimic normal phone movements and touches, which have been proven to work on nine phone models including iPhone SE (2020), Samsung Galaxy S20 FE 5G, Redmi 8 and Nokia 7.2.

Calls, browsing and banking details

Jailbroken devices can be unlocked on their own, and hackers can even answer calls on behalf of the user, as well as randomly open addresses, browse websites and, of course, bank details and other personal information.

More and more clever criminal ways

Jake Moore, Global Security Consultant at ESET, added: “It is likely that this very sophisticated attack can only be used against targeted people in very specific circumstances. But it is still important to remain vigilant against such attacks and be aware of more and more sophisticated methods.” used by cybercriminals.

Longer tactic

While this technology can only activate target devices up to 4 cm away, it highlights the potential of this new technology, which allows attackers to attack devices remotely. While this may seem highly unlikely right now, the process used could be improved in the future, allowing this tactic to be applied from great distances.

Recommendations for protection and safety

NordVPN recommends installing an additional security wall on phones to protect against such attacks, as well as using secure passwords and facial or fingerprint recognition.

Cybersecurity experts add that updating phones can also help, as packages often include additional features to keep the device secure.
