Chinese Scientists Measure Ice Thickness on Everest Summit

The Chinese Xinhua news agency reported that Chinese scientists measured the thickness of the ice layer on the summit of Everest using a ground-penetrating radar with a frequency of 1000 megahertz, and it was 9.5 meters.

Research Results and Scientific Mission

The agency indicates that the researchers obtained these results in May 2022 during a scientific mission to Everest, and this information will be used to study dynamic changes in the cryosphere in very high regions of the earth. Noting that the deviation from the average thickness was 1.2 meters.

The Chinese science mission on Everest has installed a meteorological station at an altitude of 8,800 meters, according to the agency.

Joint Chinese-Nepalese Scientific Mission

It should be noted that the joint Chinese-Nepalese scientific mission in 2020 confirmed that the height of the summit of Everest is 8848.86 meters, that is, 86 centimeters higher than the previous figure.
