CIA Director: China’s Stance on Taiwan Still Undecided

CIA director William Burns said he believed China had not yet made any decision to use force to invade Taiwan.

“I’m not sure she made that decision,” Burns said at a security conference in Aspen on Thursday. “I think even today, Chinese President Xi Jinping and the Chinese People’s Liberation Army are wondering if they can afford to succeed in a large-scale invasion of Taiwan.”

Commenting on reports that President Xi Jinping has appointed his country’s army to prepare for the return of Taiwan by 2027, Burns said, “This does not mean that conflict is inevitable or imminent.”

“I just think they should be ready,” he added.

The Chinese Foreign Ministry said earlier that Washington is using myths about the Chinese threat as a pretext for additional weaponry and maintaining military hegemony.
