Coffee and Tea Could Help Prevent Early Death in Adults with Diabetes

A study found that drinking more tea and coffee could help millions of diabetics live longer.

Researchers have found that replacing sugary drinks with anti-inflammatory drugs can increase lifespan.

The study says that if you have type 2 diabetes, drinking more coffee, tea, or plain water can reduce your risk of dying prematurely from any cause.

For 18 years, the researchers tracked the drinking habits of more than 15,000 American participants, with an average age of 61.

Among 15,486 people with diabetes, there were 7,638 deaths (49%). About 3447 (22%) were diagnosed with heart disease.

The research team found that those who drank more than one soft drink a day were five times more likely to die earlier.

The results show that consuming more sugar-sweetened beverages increases the risk of heart disease by 25% and the risk of dying from a heart attack or other cardiovascular disease by 29%. These diseases are the most common cause of death for people with type 2 diabetes.

And the risk of premature death increased by 8% for each additional dose per day.

In contrast, those who drank up to six cups of coffee a day had a 26% lower risk of premature death, while those who drank the same amount of tea had a 21% lower risk.

And those who preferred water (23%) or low-fat milk (12%) also benefited, according to the Harvard researchers.

The researchers found that those who preferred to drink more coffee and tea after they were diagnosed with diabetes had an 18% lower risk of premature death.

Researcher Dr Lu Ma said: “Coffee contains beneficial compounds that can reduce inflammation. Tea is also a good source of polyphenols, especially catechins, which have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.”

He added that choosing good drinks among diabetics is vital to good health.
