British researchers have developed the world’s first testosterone patch for women with postmenopausal symptoms.
Medgerant plans to start clinical trials in the fall. If the treatment receives regulatory approval, it will be the only testosterone replacement patch available worldwide and will be offered for the first time in the UK.
David Hadleton, founder of Medherant and a professor at the University of Warwick, said the potential to improve women’s lives by helping them cope with loss of sex drive is “tremendous.”
Experts say some are resorting to irregular doses of the gel, which is only allowed for men. Testosterone is an important hormone for women, and its production declines sharply after menopause.
Although estrogen and progesterone replacement therapy (HRT) patches, which are applied to the skin to deliver drugs, are available, there are no testosterone delivery patches for women with negative menopausal symptoms.
Professor Huddleton said: “This is a very exciting development for us - the potential of this technology to improve the lives of women is enormous.
The work we do at Medherant and Warwick is not only theoretical but also addresses issues women face that can significantly affect their daily lives and work. This can result in a much-needed product being out of stock. And with technology already proven to work, we can use our new patch to remove unnecessary suffering from women’s daily lives. We hope this will change the lives of postmenopausal women both nationally and globally.”
Since 2015, NIH guidelines have recommended that testosterone supplementation be considered for postmenopausal women with reduced libido if HRT has not been effective.
The new patch aims to fill this gap in menopause products and provide a specific treatment for women that can be made widely available.
