The death toll from flooding in Afghanistan rises to 30
Heavy rains cause significant damage
The death toll from flooding that hit Afghanistan as a result of heavy rains has risen to 30, including 26 people who died in the center of the country, according to authorities announced on Sunday.
Shafiullah Rahimi, spokesman for the National Disaster Management Authority, said the total death toll from the floods had reached 31 across the country since Friday, with significant damage to property and farmland.
Rahimi added that 26 people have died in the Jalraz district, 46 kilometers east of Kabul, after rains washed away hundreds of houses built mostly of mud.
More casualties and plea for assistance
He went on to say that four more people were killed in Kabul and more than 70 people were injured in two regions, noting that at least 40 people were missing.
Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid expressed condolences, appealing to aid groups and Kabul authorities to help the families of the victims.
Floods during the rainy season last year in Afghanistan killed dozens of people.
