The Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemned the desecration of sacred books and religious symbols, calling it a shameful act that deserves condemnation.
A statement released by the Danish Foreign Ministry today, Saturday, said that “the Danish government condemns the burning of the Holy Quran, the burning of sacred texts and insulting other religious symbols”, considering it “a shameful act and disregard for the religion of others.”
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs indicated that the Kingdom respects religious freedom, adding that many of its citizens convert to Islam. “Muslims form an important part of Danish citizens,” she added.
On the other hand, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs pointed to the need to respect freedom of speech and freedom of assembly. The text of the statement also stated that “Denmark supports the right to protest, but emphasizes that it must remain peaceful.”
And the Copenhagen police said that a protest organized outside the Iraqi embassy on July 21 was accompanied by the burning of a “book”, without specifying that it was the Koran, while the Danish Foreign Ministry admitted that the burned book was a “holy book”.
The Danish right-wing radical group “Patriots” is behind this action, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Iraq, for its part, issued a statement strongly condemning the operation.
