In August 2022, a 15-year-old girl from Virginia went missing and investigators had no clues. She was finally found eleven days later in Arizona, in the town of Tolleson. And it is unfortunately a bad meeting of the web which led the young woman to live an ordeal.

At the time, while surfing the web, she met a 29-year-old man, Ethan Roberts. He manages to seduce her and goes to her home to pick her up. Along the way, she takes various things, including her Nintendo Switch. On site, she has access to daily activities, including video games and watching videos on YouTube. But at the same time, the vile individual forces her to undress and films her. And then, at the end of the eleventh day…

By connecting, the young woman caught the attention of her friends. The latter noticed that his account was regularly online and they immediately informed the investigators in charge of the case. With Nintendo’s help, the FBI was able to obtain Roberts’ much-needed IP address and took only minutes to locate his apartment. The same day, the FBI and Tolleson police surrounded the individual’s residence and he was immediately arrested. He was charged in federal court with child pornography and possession of a minor with intent to engage in criminal sexual activity. Ethan Roberts was sentenced to 30 years in prison and those in charge of the investigation then explained that the initiative of the girl’s friends had been decisive.

Without this connection, it would have been much harder to locate her, leading Frank Milstead, the former director of the Arizona Department of Privacy, to say that criminals will always be under surveillance and that they leave a digital footprint wherever they are. Before concluding: “We will find you”. This case shows that the techniques of the police today are formidable and that it is indeed the Nintendo Switch which made it possible to save this young girl.
