Drilling of the second research well with a design depth of more than 10 km has begun in China.

The Well’s Design Depth and Location

The Chinese Xinhua news agency indicates that the well’s design depth is 10,520 meters and is located in the northwest of the Sichuan Basin, China’s main gas producing region. PetroChina is implementing this project.

Potential Discovery of Natural Gas Deposits

Experts do not rule out the discovery of natural gas deposits at great depths during drilling.

Implications of the Drilling Results

The scientists hope that the results of the drilling will shed light on the history of the basin’s formation and help accelerate the development of new technologies and equipment for China’s oil and gas industry.

Previous Well Drilling Project

It should be noted that this is the second project to drill a well with a depth of more than 10 kilometers in China; at the end of May last year, drilling of the first such well began in the Tarim Basin in the northwest of the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region of the country.
