Consequences of Drought in Istanbul

Introduction

The Istanbul Water Resources and Sewerage Authority has warned of the consequences of a significant drop in water levels in the city’s dams due to drought.

Decrease in Water Levels

According to the DHA agency, due to the ongoing drought in Istanbul, the water level in the dams has decreased, and the water in some reservoirs of the city has receded by tens of meters.

Filling Rate of Dams

According to the Istanbul Water and Sewerage Authority, the filling rate of the city’s dams is currently around 242 million cubic meters (27.88%).

Current Status of Terkos Dam

The ministry indicated that the reservoir of the Terkos Dam in Istanbul is currently 13.8% full.

Comparison to Last Year

According to available information, in September last year, the reservoirs of the dams in Istanbul were 56% full.

Call for Water Conservation

Last month, Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu called on the city’s residents to rationalize their water consumption.
