Parliament Denies Amendment of Laws Related to Cigarettes

Introduction

A member of the Egyptian Parliament’s Planning and Budget Committee, Representative Yasser Omar, confirmed that the Parliament has not amended any laws relating to cigarettes at all, and the House of Representatives has not received any legislation related to it.

In a telephone interview with Al-Hayat al-Youm, Yasser Omar explained that the recent increase in cigarette prices was due to the greed of traders and their exploitation of crises.

Omar added that “the prices of companies that sell imported cigarettes have been raised due to global crises and rising prices for raw materials, but there are few importing companies.”

Representative Yasser Omar, MP on the Parliamentary Planning and Budget Committee and head of the Tobacco Department of the Federation of Industries, pointed out that countering the greed of the merchants would lower the price of cigarettes, which he said was the best solution.
