Facebook Accused of Deceiving Parents and Neglecting Children’s Privacy by US Regulators

WhatsApp

U.S. regulators say Facebook misled parents and failed to protect kids’ privacy when using Messenger Kids, including misrepresenting the access it gave app developers to users’ personal data.

As a result, the Federal Trade Commission on Wednesday proposed sweeping changes to its 2020 privacy order with Facebook, now called META, that would prevent it from profiting from the data it collects about users under 18.

This will include data collected through virtual reality products.

The FTC said the company did not fully comply with the 2020 privacy order.

He added that Meta would also be subject to other restrictions, including the use of facial recognition technology, and would be required to provide additional privacy protections for its users.

“Facebook has repeatedly broken its privacy promises,” said Samuel Levine, director of the Federal Trade Commission’s Office of Consumer Protection. “The company’s recklessness puts young users at risk, and Facebook needs to respond to its failures.”
