Financial stocks were ending above their worst levels of the day with the NYSE Financial Sector Index dropping nearly 1.6% and the S&P Financial 100 Index retreating more than 2.1%.
In the financial sector OCN slid to a six-year low Wednesday after the mortgage-servicing firm said it was functioning to resolve a clash with regulators in California that threatens to end the company’s ability to operate in the state. Stock already had fallen almost 85% in price over the past year prior to Wednesday’s slide.

At the height of the financial crisis in late 2008, the government stepped in to rescue crippled banks — including the largest Wall Street institutions — with hundreds of billions of dollars in taxpayer money.
