Georgia Power has declared a major milestone in the development of a new 30 megawatt (MW) AC solar generation facility at Naval Submarine Base (SUBASE) Kings Bay in St. Marys, Ga. The company executed a real estate outgrant with the Department of the Navy (DON) which authorizes the company to use land on the base for the solar project. The agreement marks the start of a new partnership between DON and Georgia Power where the company will develop renewable energy that will further diversify the company’s energy portfolio and enhance DON’s energy security.
The outgrant provides Georgia Power access to 258 acres of land at SUBASE Kings Bay for the development of ground-mounted solar photovoltaic (PV) panels to deliver energy to the state’s electric grid. The company anticipates to break ground on the project late summer and bring the facility online by the end of 2016. The project will be brought online at or below the company’s avoided cost, the amount projected it would cost the company to generate comparable energy from other sources. The solar project at SUBASE Kings Bay is estimated to represent a $75 million investment at the installation.
Georgia Power is the largest partner of Southern Company (SO), one of the nation’s largest generators of electricity.
The Southern Company, together with its auxiliaries, operates as a public electric utility company. It is involved in the generation, transmission, and distribution of electricity through coal, nuclear, oil and gas, and hydro resources in the states of Alabama, Georgia, Florida, and Mississippi.
Finally, STMicroelectronics NV (NYSE:STM), ended its last trade with 0.50% gain, and closed at $8.01.
Building on many years of close partnership and numerous joint research programs, STMicroelectronics, and the French Institute of Materials, Microelectronics and Nanosciences in Provence (IM2NP - CNRS / Aix-Marseille University / University of Toulon / ISEN engineering school), member of the Carnot STAR (Science and Technology for Research Applications) Institute, have declared the official launch of a new joint research laboratory to develop the next generations of high-reliability, ultra-miniaturized electronic components.
The Radiation Effects and Electrical Reliability (REER) Joint Laboratory is a multi-site research establishment that will bring together teams from the IM2NP Institute, based in Marseille and Toulon, and specialist engineers from the ST facility in Crolles, near Grenoble.
The REER Joint Laboratory’s science program will focus on two main areas of research: the effect of radiation on digital nanometer-scale circuits and the electrical reliability of nanometer-scale CMOS (complementary metal-oxide semiconductor) technologies. These lines of research are crucially important for ST and its ability to produce integrated circuits with extremely high levels of reliability for a wide range of key sectors, such as the automotive sector, networks, medical, space and security.
STMicroelectronics N.V. designs, develops, manufactures, and markets various semiconductor integrated circuits and discrete devices worldwide. The company offers a range of semiconductor products, counting discrete and standard commodity components, application-specific integrated circuits, full-custom devices and semi-custom devices, micro-electro-mechanical systems, microcontrollers, sensors, digital consumer products, imaging products, memory products, media application processors, and application-specific standard products for analog, digital, and mixed-signal applications, in addition to silicon chips and smartcards.
