Jane Palmieri, business president, Dow Building & Construction, a business group of The Dow Chemical Company (DOW), has been selected as a 2015 recipient of Green Building & Design’s (gb&d’s) Women in Sustainability Leadership Award.
Green Building & Design, a magazine that promotes leading green professionals with a mission statement of creating a more sustainable world, created the awards to celebrate the achievements of women who are making lasting change in the environmental arena. In giving the awards, the magazine strives to identify, support and give opportunities to future women in leadership.
The Nov. 6 edition of gb&d declared this year’s recipients and Palmieri will be recognized at a ceremony on Nov. 19 in Washington, D.C.
“We are very proud that Jane is receiving this well-deserved accolade,” said Neil C. Hawkins, corporate vice president, EH&S, and chief sustainability officer. “For two decades, Jane has been a leader in Dow’s commitment to sustainability and energy efficiency both inside and outside the company – from assisting to develop technologies to lightweight automobiles and make solar power more accessible, to championing Dow’s energy and climate change policy proposals.”
Hawkins added that Palmieri’s work strongly aligns with Dow’s 2025 Sustainability Aims, which seek to redefine the role of business in society by unlocking the potential of people and science, valuing nature, and collaborating courageously.

Kinross Gold Corporation, declared that it has reached a definitive asset purchase agreement to acquire 100% of the Bald Mountain (“Bald Mountain”) gold mine, which comprises a large associated land package, and 50% of the Round Mountain (“Round Mountain”) gold mine in Nevada from Barrick Gold Corporation for $610 million in cash.1
Planned Rationale for Acquisition:
- Value Enhancing - Accretive on a number of key per share metrics counting production, cash flow, and mineral reserves and resources2. The acquisition will add about 430,000 gold equivalent ounces (Au eq. oz.) in annual average forecast production over the first three years and is predictable to lower Kinross’ cost profile.
- Unique opportunity - Strengthens portfolio with two quality, free cash flowing mines with mineral resource potential, located in a world-class mining jurisdiction.
- Builds on Nevada and U.S. platform - Consolidates Round Mountain ownership, production in the United States improvements by 56%. Strong fit with Kinross’ open-pit heap leach skillset and potential operational synergies.
- Clear exploration upside potential - Promising mine life expansion potential from existing pits, and potential extensions to near-pit historic operations at Bald Mountain.The Bald Mountain property encompasses a 600 km2 prospective land package along the southern extension of the Carlin trend, the most prolific gold producing region in the United States. Kinross will leverage Barrick’s area expertise to explore and develop 40% of the land package outside the current core mining area as part of a 50/50 exploration joint venture.
- Maintains Balance Sheet Strength and Liquidity - All cash transaction improvements overall cash flow, lowers costs and enhances credit metrics.

Las Vegas Sands Corp., declared a homeless youth awareness campaign in support of National Homeless Youth Awareness Month. As part of the company’s corporate citizenship program Sands Cares, the “Lost Vegas” media campaign, startning November 15, asks area residents to join the company in delivering support to Nevada Partnership for Homeless Youth (NPHY) by donating or volunteering time to assist homeless youth.
The Las Vegas area has more than 2,000 estimated unaccompanied homeless youth and teens, many of whom become homeless quickly and un predictablely. Faced with finding resources for their survival, they learn to blend in with their peers to avoid detection, truly becoming the “lost” population of Las Vegas.
“Being young and homeless is a truly frightening proposition,” said Ron Reese, senior vice president of corporate communications at Las Vegas Sands. “Our aim is to assist NPHY tell the success stories of real people who have practiced homelessness to show the impact we can have when these kids get the support and resources they need to dig out of their circumstances.”
The Sands Cares “Lost Vegas” awareness campaign is accompanied by contributions LVS made to both Nevada Partnership for Homeless Youth (NPHY) and STREET Teens in 2015. Donations to both organizations were aimed at assisting homeless teens focus on their academic and professional futures by providing strengthened educational sites and assistance that are available year-round, counting technology, personal support and scholarships. LVS also amplified its work to assist address homelessness in Las Vegas with a recent donation to the National Alliance to End Homelessness to support its current effort to end homelessness among veterans.
