Brazil’s Justice and Public Security Minister Flavio Dino said his country may reconsider its participation in the International Criminal Court and withdraw its signature from the Rome Convention that established the court.
Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Dino said: “The International Criminal Court is integrated into the Brazilian legal system, but many countries, including the most powerful, have not done so.”
He continued: “This suggests that at some point Brazilian diplomacy may reconsider the decision to join the agreement, since there is no equivalence regarding the application of this instrument in different countries.”
The minister explained that this is what Brazilian President Lula da Silva had in mind when he spoke of doubts about Brazil’s continued membership of the court.
He recalled that the United States, China and Russia are not considered members of the International Criminal Court.
