From hot cocoa to chamomile tea, there are plenty of drinks you can try before bed to get a good night’s sleep.
Sleep expert Sammy Margo shared nine drinks she recommends to help you sleep better at night.
First, Margo said, “Cocoa can have a calming effect,” but clarified that it “should not be confused with hot chocolate, which is high in sugar.”
A sleep expert explained: “Cocoa is one of the by-products used in the production of chocolate. As a powder, it can be added to hot water to make a chocolate-flavored drink. It is not as creamy or sweet as regular hot chocolate. But that’s why it’s better to sleep.”
And while it’s not a quick fix for sleepless nights, for example, it “may help you calm down at night.”
Another drink that Margo recommends is milk. “Milk is full of ingredients that make you sleepy. Think tryptophan, for example. Milk contains this amino acid, which has been shown to help improve sleep,” she explains.
Margot also loves chamomile tea, which is “one of the best drinks before bed.”
This herbal drink contains the antioxidant apigenin, which is widely believed to help reduce anxiety and promote sleep.
And another herbal tea: delicious flower tea with lavender.
“This might just be a godsend for those of us struggling with stress and sleep issues. The history of the use of this herb goes back to the ancient Egyptians and Greeks,” said Margot.
Drinks that may help improve sleep include:
Hot cocoa.
Warm milk.
Chamomile tea.
Lavender tea.
Green tea without caffeine.
Cherry juice.
Almond milk.
Lemon Tree.
Kava tea.
“While these drinks are unlikely to be harmful, they can help improve sleep. None of the following should be seen as a quick fix, and they should all be considered in the context of the bigger picture of sleep health,” Margo added.
