Peter Humphrey, a British private investigator who worked for GlaxoSmithKline Plc, was released from prison in China following his conviction last year for illegally obtaining information about Chinese citizens, according to Bloomberg.
Humphrey was tried in August and sentenced to 2 1/2 years in jail. He was released early for health reasons, according to the Financial Times. His American wife, Yu Yingzeng, is still being held on a 2-year sentence. The U.K. consulate in Shanghai said in an e-mail that it’s assisting Humphrey’s family. Bloomberg Reports.
Glaxo hired Humphrey’s firm, ChinaWhys, to investigate a security breach related to its former China head, Mark Reilly. The U.K.’s Sunday Times stated last year that Humphrey was hired after a clandestinely recorded sex-tape of Reilly was sent to the drugmaker’s senior staff. Reilly, accused of ordering employees to bribe doctors, was given a suspended sentence. Bloomberg added.
